BioSciencePEI ~ an interactive community was launched this past week in PEI in support of government, industry and academia to assist with the growth and development within the bioscience sector in Prince Edward Island. One of the ongoing initiatives in PEI is the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada competition. BioSciencePEI is an ideal toolset to support the research and work of our SBCC group and teams as they carry out their projects this year. All the school teams, teachers and mentors will be connected within the BioSciencePEI community to assist by providing an online virtual environment to further enhance the supports required to carry out their SBCC research.

BioSciencePEI is an online resource which can help bring industry, government and academia together to connect, share and collaborate on activities.

BioSciencePEI will serve as a private online interactive community for any interested members within the BioScience cluster in PEI. Access is gained by invitation only or request to join pending approval. Within the BioSciencePEI online community you can:
*work in teams and groups
*discuss, share and collaborate
*communicate with emails, texts and voice messages
*create, edit and share documents
*host virtual meetings and conference calls
*manage events and meetings in a shared calendar
*create to-do lists and assign tasks

Members of the interactive community will have access to all the resources required to connect, meet, share, discuss, exchange information and collaborate. By offering these resources to the BioScience community in PEI, we hope to show that there is a need for and value in having this type of virtual support resource.

We welcome everyone who has an interest in and a role to play within the BioScience cluster on PEI to join. We look forward to meeting many of you inside our interactive community gaining feedback in support of the growth and development of BioScience here in Prince Edward Island.

October 31, 2011 17:17 ET

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Oct. 31, 2011) – Cori Bonina, Immediate Past Chair of Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) Board of Directors and John F.T. Scott, President and CEO of CFIG, are pleased to announce that Scott Adams of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, has been named the recipient of the 2011 CFIG National Scholarship.

Scott was born and raised in Saskatoon, where he graduated from Walter Murray Collegiate this year. In 2011, Scott was a recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal, the University of Toronto National Book Award, the Saskatoon Public Board of Education Proficiency Award, and all through high school, has a myriad of academic citations and awards for excellence in history, music and last year received the Provincial Gold Medal in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge. Scott also placed first in the Recital Class of the Saskatoon Music Festival this past April.

“Scott has an exemplary academic and extra-curricular record that makes us proud to be a part of what we know will be a very successful academic career in the next few years” said John Scott.

Scott has also been involved in research around the issue of minimizing world food shortages. His research at the University of Saskatchewan in the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge received first place nationally and he represented Canada at the International BioGENEius Challenge in Atlanta, Georgia.

Scott is also active in the community, serving as a member of the Youth Advisory Council of the Saskatoon Community Foundation; a volunteer piano teacher for Heart of the City Program, teaching piano to inner city students; a volunteer for the Saskatoon Food Bank and also regularly performs piano recitals for residents at special care homes, enhancing the lives of those people.

Scott was presented with a $6000 cheque and the Anthony G. Wilshaw Memorial Scholarship, named after the late CFIG President who passed away in 1990 at Monday night’s dinner at Grocery Innovations Canada, held at the Toronto Congress Centre October 24 and 25. Scott’s application was sponsored by Riversdale Fine Foods of Saskatoon.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) is a non-profit trade association founded in 1962, which continues to be a collaborative community, equipping and enabling independent, franchised and specialty grocers for sustainable success. Representing over 4000 grocery retailers from every part of Canada, CFIG is a strong and united voice for independent grocers, providing programs for operational excellence, facilitating educational and training programs and fostering enabling-relationships among retailers and suppliers. CFIG is a respected organization that speaks confidently for its retail members to industry, government, and the consumer.

BioNova is co-ordinating the Nova Scotia edition of the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada.

Apply to participate in the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada (SBCC) and get to work at making a difference through science. The SBCC isn’t like other science competitions. Here you get to propose and design your own biotech research project and work with real scientists in real labs to see it through. You’ll have the chance to compete with other high school students from across Nova Scotia and Canada. Plus the SBCC gives you the chance to win cash prizes.

The purpose of the SBCC is to encourage Grade 10 to 12 students to design and carry out original experiments under the guidance of mentors, which can be from industry, university and government. The Challenge is an exciting way for students to learn what scientists do and to perform experiments where the answers are unknown and mistakes sometimes lead to amazing discoveries.

This year, the top five Nova Scotia projects will compete in the Atlantic region Challenge which will take place in New Brunswick in April 2012.
